Mason Frizzell

His musical path started at the piano, then moved through clarinet and saxophone before he found the instrument that became his voice: the bass guitar, which he picked up at age eleven.

Playing several instruments early on shaped how Mason hears music. He listens not just as a bassist but as someone thinking about the whole arrangement. He is a confident, inventive improviser. His playing draws from jazz, gospel, fusion, funk, and Latin music, and he also brings a strong sense of composition, groove, melody, and interaction with other musicians.

As a writer and aspiring producer, he’s drawn to the full creative process: taking an idea from its first sketch, developing the composition and arrangement, bringing in other musicians, and shaping it into a finished recording. Other young musicians have already sought him out to help finish their own songs, counting on him for the bold, fresh ideas that pull a track together. He has also started singing, and handles the lead vocals on both of his released originals. His goal is to work as a composer, bandleader, artist, and producer.

Today he studies and performs throughout the Phoenix jazz community, continuing to develop his own voice as he prepares for the next stage of his musical education.
